Decatur Doulas are proud to offer Placenta Encapsulation to those who may be interested in this additional service. The Placenta Encapsulation is done by Angie Stewart, who studied the ancient practice of preparation and encapsulation through an extensive apprenticeship in 2013.
WHAT IS PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION?
Placenta encapsulation is a process in which a mother’s placenta is converted into an edible form in order to reap the benefits during your postpartum recovery. The practice of placenta encapsulation can be traced back to Chinese herbal medicine.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PLACENTA ENCAPSULATION?
Many women who encapsulate their placenta report increased breastmilk supply and a decrease in postpartum mood imbalance. It can increase postpartum iron levels and help the "baby blues" by replenishing what was lost at childbirth with your very own hormones, made especially for you, by you.
I offer two preparation methods: Raw Encapsulation and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine Inspired), there is more information about the differences in processes below. You also have the option of additional products including, tincture, salve, placenta print and cord keepsake.
With this method I gently rinse the placenta and cut it into paper thin slices. I place the pieces in the dehydrator and leave them for several hours. When they are dried out I then grind them into a fine powder and put the powder into individual capsules. The capsules can be frozen and will last for many years.
With this method I gently rinse the placenta and then I steam it with or without herbs. Using the herbs in the steaming is thought to bring out the placenta’s natural healing properties. Example of herbs I use: Lemon (cooling & antiseptic), Cayenne & Ginger (warming). After steaming I then cut it into paper thin slices. I place the pieces in the dehydrator for several hours. When they are dried I then grind them into a fine powder and put the powder into individual capsules. The capsules can be frozen and will last for many years. TCM method of encapsulation is said to bring warmth back to the mother. Some mothers request I save the broth from steaming the placenta and use the "mothers broth" as a tea or soup.
I take a thumbnail size piece of the placenta and add it to 100 – 150 proof high grade, distilled alcohol and let it sit for at least 6 weeks to macerate. This process will keep the benefits of the placenta for mother and child for a very long time. It can be used as a homeopathic aid during difficult or stressful life moments such as: times of transition, trauma, puberty, and menopause.
The salve is made from a piece of the dehydrated placenta. You can apply this salve to a C-section incision, (only after the wound is closed). It can lessen the scarring, itching and discomfort. You can apply it to your perineum for hemorrhoids & perennial tearing. It can be applied to areas that have burns, diaper rash, eczema, sun burns and skin irritations. You can use the salve on a baby as long as there are no skin allergies. I would test a small area first.
I place your placenta on water color paper or canvas for you to have as a special keepsake. I can also use herbs to provide a painted picture of the placenta.
I can see what shape your cord wants to make and dry it as a keepsake or it can also be ground with the placenta and added to your placenta pills.
